We had our first ever "Back to Basics Skincare Workshop" on Friday night, big topic of the night was Sunscreen, made me realise that the SPF in sunscreens is a bit of a mystery to a lot of people, so let me help.
Are you a pale skinned person or do you tan quite easily, whichever one you may be, do you really understand how the SPF in your sunscreen applies to your skin? SOAKING UP THE SUN.....SAFELY SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and this will indicate a sunscreen's ability to block out those harsh UV rays. The numbers themselves show you an approximate measure of time that you as an individual can stay out in the sun, before you start to burn. Now comes the big question how long is that? This time is calculated on what the individual burn time is for each person, so if you're quite pale skinned, your burn time may be 3 minutes, so if you have SPF30 on, you will get 90 minutes coverage before you start to burn. If you're a bit darker and your burn time is longer say 10minutes, you will have 300 minutes coverage before you start to burn. Don't forget this is not an exact science, the amount of UV rays that will reach us depends on a number of things, including cloud coverage on the day, what time of day it is and don't forget the reflection of the ground or water as well. No matter what SPF your sunscreen may be, if its not applied properly you will get burned. Hope this has helped demystify how SPF works, any questions, please message me, love to educate people.
